CCD2 is the second EU Consumer Credit Directive. It extends consumer-credit requirements to certain buy now, pay later (BNPL) purchases.
For affected Ratepay payment flows, CCD2 introduces additional requirements around BNPL presentation, pre-contractual credit information, creditworthiness decisions and post-purchase credit information.
Affected payment journeys must meet the applicable CCD2 requirements from 20 November 2026.
This documentation explains CCD2 in the context of Ratepay payment methods and integrations. It is not legal advice.
Please involve your legal team when assessing how CCD2 applies to your business and markets.
Affected payment methods must be presented fairly and transparently.
Where BNPL is promoted, relevant costs and risks must be communicated clearly. Available payment methods should also be presented without undue emphasis on credit.
Buyer benefit
Buyers can better understand relevant costs, risks and repayment conditions before choosing a credit-based payment method.
Before completing an affected purchase, the Buyer receives the Standard European Consumer Credit Information (SECCI).
SECCI provides the key terms of the proposed credit, such as the amount, repayment conditions and relevant costs.
The required SECCI step must be completed in a timely manner before the buyer can complete the checkout process / the buyer becomes bound by the credit agreement.
Buyer benefit
Buyers can review the proposed credit terms before deciding whether to proceed with the purchase.
Ratepay continues to perform the applicable creditworthiness assessment.
- In the event of a rejection, the consumer must be informed of the rejection without delay.
- Where applicable, the consumer must be informed about the automated processing, their right to a human review, and the procedure for challenging or reviewing the decision. This will be provided by Ratepay to you as merchant.
Buyer benefit
Buyers receive clearer information about relevant credit-related declines instead of seeing only a generic rejection.
After shipment is confirmed to Ratepay (via Confirmation Deliver / Capture), Ratepay sends the buyer the Credit Contract and related post-purchase credit communication.
This is separate from the SECCI provided before purchase.
Buyer benefit
Buyers receive a durable record of the agreed credit terms that they can refer to after the purchase.
CCD2 applicability depends on factors such as the payment method, buyer type, country and your business setup.
For example, the SECCI flow applies to affected B2C purchases by private Buyers, while B2B transactions are outside this flow.
Choose the next step that matches where you are in your CCD2 assessment.
